Beethoven – Mass in C

Prince Nikolaus II Esterházy had commissioned a Mass from Beethoven for his wife's name day. After the premiere he publicly mocked the bewildered composer; in a later letter he became even more explicit: Beethoven's Mass was "unbearable, ridiculous and hideous", he wrote to a friend, and he was "furious and ashamed".
