Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's 'Elias' is a great drama, and perhaps for that reason it has remained extremely popular, especially with English-speaking audiences, since its premiere in Birmingham. Queen Victoria even regarded the composer as an 'Elijah of the new art'.
