For Beethoven, standing still was cruel, which is why he pursued his path as a composer consistently, leaving his predecessors far behind, while at the same time creating the model for the generations after him. He wrote his fifth and last piano concerto in 1809 in a turbulent situation, as he suffered under the Napoleonic occupation of Vienna.
