In his "Konzertstück" Schumann experimented with an unusual line-up: not one instrument is the soloist, but the whole group of horns. He wrote the concerto for the possibilities of the newly developed valve horn, which went beyond those of natural horns. Anton Bruckner was no disciple of classical-Romantic German music; his source of inspiration was the operas of Richard Wagner.
