World Exhibition, 1867: the streets of Paris are thronged, and all the languages of the world chatter over one another. Under Napoleon III a liberal wind blows, turning the city into a space of social possibility. First performed in 1866, Offenbach's Parisian Life is set in the absolute present, for the World Exhibition is the place and time of the action.
