Stringed instruments and the piano have been established as classical solo instruments for centuries, and symphonic wind instruments are also sometimes heard as soloists with orchestra. The saxophone, by contrast, is usually associated with jazz or pop, although Adolphe Sax did develop it in the nineteenth century, very much with the aim of adding a new nuance to the colour palette of the symphony orchestra.
