The morning song of a jester opens a concert in which humour is at first the focus. Strauss's "Burleske" is silly, shrill and imaginative, and not infrequently infects the pianists who are to play "con umore". In the second part it becomes dance-like, yet it is death that calls out in Mussorgsky's songs.
