This concert juxtaposes two works for strings separated by more than a century: Felix Mendelssohn's Octet, composed in 1825 when the musician was only 16, and Richard Strauss's Sextet from Capriccio, written in 1940–1941, when the composer was approaching old age and Europe was plunged into war.
