Philippe Gaubert studied violin, flute, composition and conducting before becoming principal flute of the Paris Opera, so it is hardly surprising that he left numerous pieces for flute. His three "Aquarelles" were written in 1915, when he was serving in the French army during the First World War, yet these pieces say nothing of the cruelty of war.
