Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's output is divided between his two most famous oratorios: "Paulus", an early composition, and "Elias", written shortly before the composer's death. First performed in English in Britain in 1846, Mendelssohn did not live to hear the German premiere. In his world-famous oratorio, together with the librettist Julius Schubring, a theologian from Dessau and a friend of Mendelssohn, he traces the multifaceted character of the Old Testament prophet Elijah.
