Beethoven wrote of his Sixth Symphony that it expresses 'more feeling than painting'. He did not mean a mere depiction of nature, but music that makes the innermost depths of the soul audible. The WDR Symphony Orchestra under Manfred Honeck takes up this idea and interprets the 'Pastoral' as an interplay between outward movement and inner feeling.
