Alpensinfonie

Strauss's Alpine Symphony is an ascent in sound: morning, summit, thunderstorm and descent become an overwhelming orchestral panorama. Alongside this masterpiece, which in the spirit of 'what you hear is what you get' leads directly into images, stands Schumann with Stephen Isserlis: an artist who plays Schumann, writes Schumann, is Schumann.
