In the winter of 1816–17, Vienna was gripped by pure 'Rossini mania'. Music by the young Rossini dominated concert programmes, and audiences fell head over heels for his Italian flair. The 20-year-old Franz Schubert was among his admirers. Inspired by Rossini, he composed his Italian Overture in that same year of 1817.
