Johannes Brahms’s last symphony and Béla Bartók’s great Violin Concerto are separated by 54 years, yet they are linked by the concepts of tradition and renewal, and by thoughts of a confrontation with destiny. Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2 is a unique encounter of classical forms and the Hungarian musical language, while Brahms’s Symphony No. 4 is one of the deepest confessions of passing and reconciliation arising from the Romantic movement.
