With archaic force, Carl Orff brings to life in his monumental cantata Carmina Burana for soloists, choir and orchestra medieval writings that were discovered in 1803 in the Bavarian monastery of Benediktbeuern. The texts of the Carmina Burana, some of them earthy and obscene (translated roughly as "Beuern Songs" or "Songs from Benediktbeuern"), tell of the pleasures of life and the whims of the goddess Fortuna, who relentlessly turns her wheel of fate.
