The famous Stabat Mater, which Pergolesi completed just before his death, achieved almost universal fame by the middle of the 18th century. With its beauty, the opening duet alone could have secured its composer's immortality. In contrast, Vivaldi's motet In furore iustissimæ iræ expresses divine wrath with breathless virtuosity.
