Monteverdi Choir – Rousset – Handel: Theodora

It was in response to the reluctance of English audiences towards Italian opera that Handel set out to develop an English-language repertoire. Theodora, an absolute masterpiece of English Baroque, nevertheless was a failure: the dark, restrained lyricism of the oratorio ran counter to contemporary taste for glitter.
