Jules Massenet’s (1842–1912) opera Don Quichotte, composed to a libretto by Henri Cain and first performed in 1910 at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, is a striking example of the adaptation of a literary narrative for the stage. In their heroic comedy, the composer and librettist refer only indirectly to Miguel de Cervantes’s famous novel.
