The piano quartet is a relatively rare genre in classical music. Mozart’s two works set an almost impossibly high standard. Before them, instruments in works for similar forces were not treated as equal partners. Mozart combined the technical demands of the piano concerto with the close-knit ensemble playing characteristic of the string quartet.
