Alongside Beethoven's seventeen string quartets, his ensemble of ten sonatas for piano and violin forms a body of work of the very first order in musical invention. Composed for nine of them between 1796 and 1803, and the last in 1812, they stand from the outset at the hinge between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
