Les Pêcheurs de perles

Les Pêcheurs de perles launched Bizet's operatic career, although the work was not received with enthusiasm at its premiere; in the composer's own words, it remained 'an honourable but brilliant failure'. Written when he was only twenty-five, it shows the influence of Gounod and Verdi.
