La damnation de Faust

Faust is consumed by gloomy thoughts. At the moment he wants to end his life, the devilish Méphistophélès appears with the promise of happiness. Berlioz's Faust is a thoroughly modern character: he longs for unity with nature and for a great love, but he finds no lasting contentment.
